Stainless Steel Care Guide

Stainless steel cookware is built to last a lifetime — but keeping it spotless and scratch-free takes a few simple habits. Here’s how to care for your stainless steel pots and pans so they stay beautiful and perform at their best.

Everyday Cooking Tips

  • Preheat properly. Heat the pan over medium heat for 1–2 minutes before adding oil. A properly preheated stainless pan is naturally more non-stick.
  • Use the water droplet test. Flick a few drops of water into the pan — if they bead and dance (Leidenfrost effect), it’s ready. If they evaporate instantly, it’s too hot.
  • Don’t move food too soon. Food will naturally release from stainless steel once it’s properly seared. If it’s sticking, give it another 30 seconds.
  • Use any utensil. Stainless steel is compatible with metal, silicone, and wood utensils.

Cleaning Stainless Steel

  • For everyday cleaning: Warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Most stainless pans are dishwasher safe, but hand washing keeps them looking newer longer.
  • For stuck-on food: Add water to the pan and bring to a simmer — the residue will loosen. Then scrub with a non-abrasive pad.
  • For rainbow discolouration (heat tint): This is normal and harmless. Remove it with a splash of white vinegar or a stainless steel cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend.
  • For white mineral deposits: Boil a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water in the pan for a few minutes, then rinse.
  • For stubborn stains: Make a paste with Bar Keepers Friend and water, apply with a soft cloth in the direction of the grain, rinse thoroughly.

What to Avoid

  • Steel wool or harsh abrasive pads — they scratch the surface.
  • Bleach-based cleaners — they can pit and damage stainless steel.
  • Leaving salty water to sit in the pan — salt can cause pitting over time. Always add salt after water boils.
  • Extreme temperature changes — don’t plunge a hot pan into cold water.

Storing Stainless Steel

  • Stack with pan protectors or soft cloths between pieces to prevent scratching.
  • Store lids separately or inverted to avoid trapping moisture.
  • Hang pots if you have the space — it’s the best way to protect them.
